Soda Stereo and Echo and the Bunnymen: Who copied who?

By With 4 Comments

One of the things I love best is to load my 60 GB iPod with random music from my 26,277 song collection. I then listen to it while I work and oftentimes I discover that I have music that really sucks. On the other hand, every now and then I find a small gem that is hiding and waiting to be heard again and again and again.

Today while doing something at work which I cannot recall (must have been hellavu important), I started to listen to Soda Stereo (the best spanish rock band, period) – the song was El Efecto Doppler…after 20 seconds in the song I was shocked to find that I was listening to Echo and the Bunnymen!!

I then immediately called “rip-off” and as I am typing this blog, I ignore who copied who. If I had to guess, I would say that my Argentinian friends did the copying…let’s dig deeper.

So before going any further, here is Soda Stereo’s El Efecto Doppler:

And here’s Echo and the Bunnymen’s All my Colors:

Now isn’t that fishy???

Further investigation lead me here which shows the album being released in 1981 whereas Soda’s was in 1995.

After reading some comments on this post, it has been brought to my attention that this sampling was given full credits in the respective album, so Soda has done nothing wrong – woot!

I think it was on purpose. Sampling the ambient and drum, and doing others melodic lines, is like performing a master piece but with your tastes

I forgot to say that in the advertisments, it says that it containes drums from that song
